UVic unveils Swimming Circle of Excellence
VICTORIA - In celebration of Dr. Peter Vizsolyi's 25th year as head coach of the Vikes swim team, the University of Victoria and UVic Vikes Swimming Alumni chapter unveiled the Swimming Circle of Excellence at a cermenoy Saturday night.
The special recognition ceremony took place Saturday evening at the Victoria Art Gallery. Over 100 swim alumni and current varsity-athletes were in attendance.
The Circle of Excellence is a hierarchy of recognition, acknowledging the outstanding accomplishments of Vikes swimmers. The recipients will be adorned on banners, which will be displayed on the walls of McKinnon Pool.
There are three levels of distinction: platinum, gold, and blue.
Platinum represents swimmers who have represented Canada at the Olympics and/or World Championships. Gold represents swimmers who have represented Canada at the Commonwealth games, Pan-American games, Pan-Pacific games, FISU Universiade, or Swimming Canada gold medalist. Blue represents swimmers who have won a Swimming Canada silver or bronze medal, or CIS medal.
The Vikes also celebrated the 25th year of service of head coach Dr. Peter Vizsolyi. Since taking over the program in 1983, nine Vikes swimmers have competed in the Olympic games, 47 have won medals in major international competition, and 243 medals have been won at the CIS National Championships. Dr. Vizsolyi was also named CIS Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1998.
